Without you we are but dust

A visiting minister waxed eloquent during the offertory prayer. “Dear Lord,” he began with arms extended and a rapturous look on his upturned face, “without you we are but dust...”

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter (who was listening carefully for a change!) leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little girl voice, “Mom, what is butt dust?”

Over the past four years that I have worked with her, I have come to believe that my weekly massage appointment with Jennifer Scotchel, the best massage therapist in Morgantown, West Virginia, is the most important investment I make in my overall health and well-being.

Let me give you an example. I am writing this sitting in a cramped coach seat on United Airlines. After a week of travel, long executive meetings, and computer work, I feel a growing tension in my neck, shoulders, back, and hips. Yet, I am not concerned. Jennifer will take care of it! She has so many times before.

Jennifer’s massage therapy is intuitive, gentle, and highly skilled. Frankly, I don’t like pain. But sometimes, the source of my tension is deep. I’ve had some massage therapists try to “force” the tension out by applying more and more painful pressure. Ouch!!!

Jennifer, mercifully, is totally different. She has a way of knowing exactly how to unwind the tension while allowing my whole body to relax deeply under her patient hands. I trust her… completely.

I’m also someone who stores emotions in my body. Here is where Jennifer’s multidimensional, energetic approach to massage makes such a difference. My left knee never “felt right” for many years, and it got worse after a long period of sciatic pain followed by back surgery. There was nothing “physically” wrong with the knee but it never felt strong. Jennifer’s compassionate attention to it has restored healthy vitality and energy flow through both my knee and my entire left leg. I am so grateful to God for connecting me with a professional with such a caring heart.

I know many people consider massage a “special treat”—pampering to be reserved for birthdays, Christmas, and special events. What I would tell them is this: If you are a person who wants to live life fully, to be at your best both physically and emotionally, sign up for a massage a week from Jennifer while there are still available slots in her schedule. Try it for month… and notice how you feel. Notice how much more energy, clarity, and even patience you have. I have no doubt that you will start looking forward to your sessions with Jennifer as much as I do!

Jennifer is also the mother of two girls, and she understand first-hand the benefits of regular pregnancy massage as well as support during labor and delivery. If you are travelling to Cheat Lake Physicians for pregnancy and delivery care, I’d call Jennifer and arrange to get a massage at the same time. Her type of gentle, supportive work is perfect for the child bearing year.

Perfect Daughter

The birth of our second child, a daughter, came after a long
and difficult labor. But it was definitely worth it when our
beautiful little girl emerged, perfect in every way. Later,
in my room, my husband looked at her tenderly, with tears in
his eyes. Then as he glanced up at me, I expected him to utter
something truly poetic. Instead he asked, “What’d we decide
to call her again?”

I have to sleep in Daddy’s room

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was
tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the
light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, “Mommy, will
you sleep with me tonight?”

The mother smiled. “I can’t dear,” she said. ‘I have to sleep
in Daddy’s room.”

The little boy replied with a shaking voice, “The big sissy.”

I never want to live in a vegetative state

My wife and I were sitting in the living room and I said to
her, “Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative
state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle.
If that ever happens, just pull the plug.”

She got up, unplugged the TV and threw out all of my beer!

Authentic Irish Toast

A guy and a girl are having a drink together in a bar. The
man raises his glass and says, “Here’s hoping you’re in
Heaven ten minutes before the devil knows you’re dead!”

“What’s that mean?” asks the girl.

“That,” answers her date, “is an authentic Irish toast.”

“Oh. Well, here’s to bread, eggs and cinnamon.”

“Bread, eggs and cinnamon? What’s that?”

The girl says, “That’s French toast.”

Who You Are

I know of your anger
Yet I will not participate
Your tears I can share
But do not commiserate

I know the darkness of fear
Is only the absent of light
I know it’s your soul, not your eyes
That brings you true sight

I know in times of despair
It seems I am so very far
But I am not, I am with you
I just know “Who You Are”
