Drowning

My fear drowned me.
It stole my breath
and left me choking for air.
It pushed me under
where it was dark,
and I was alone with my fear.

But when fear lost its grip,
I came alive again
and found that the darkness
that cloaked me
would disappear
if I just opened my eyes.

I could fill my lungs
with sweet air
if I just chose to breathe.

Now I wonder
where my fear came from,
how it held such a grip
on my life.

In my new world of
light and air,
fear is nowhere to be found.

For I know now
that fear is not my friend.
It was not protecting me
from harm.

Fear was keeping me
from life.
